Most advice about ranking in AI Overviews is telling a 2025 story. The decline was real, then it reversed: organic click-through rate on AI Overview queries rebounded 85% in two months (Seer Interactive, April 24, 2026). The number that matters most to a local business went almost unreported: 76.9% of "near me" informational queries now produce an AI Overview. Here is the 2026 data, and what a six-person service business can execute without an enterprise budget.
"Near me" informational queries trigger an AI Overview 76.9% of the time (Seer Interactive, April 24, 2026).
What does "ranking" in an AI Overview actually mean?
Ranking in an AI Overview means being one of the sources Google's model retrieves and links when it generates an answer. It is an inclusion, not a position. Google's guidance is blunt: "There is nothing special for creators to do to be considered other than to follow our regular guidance for appearing in search" (Google Search Central, John Mueller, May 21, 2025).
True but incomplete. Ahrefs found 76% of AI Overview citations also rank in the organic top 10, median position #2. Ranking is the entry ticket; what follows is a separate selection, run at the chunk level and re-run on every refresh.
Cited vs. mentioned: why 62% of AI citations never name your brand
Citation and mention are different outcomes, and most businesses track only one. Semrush, with Kevin Indig, found 62% of AI citations are "ghost citations": linked, but the brand is never named.
A ghost citation passes a click; a named mention makes you the recommendation next time. Citations come from quotable content, mentions come from off-site brand signals, and our answer engine optimization services treat them as two scoreboards.
The 2026 reversal: AI Overview CTR is recovering and nobody updated their advice
Organic click-through rate on AI Overview queries bottomed out in December 2025 at 1.31% and reached 2.36% by February 2026, an 85% rebound in two months (Seer Interactive, April 24, 2026; 53 brands, 5.47M queries, 2.43 billion organic impressions). The 2025 decline was real in its window, 1.76% to 0.61% between June 2024 and September 2025 (Seer, November 4, 2025), and it is the last data most guides ingested.
What a citation is actually worth now
Citation is worth roughly double, but it does not restore what an AI Overview costs you: cited pages earn 120% more clicks per impression than uncited pages on the same query, while still trailing a no-AI-Overview SERP by 38%. Per million informational impressions:
| Scenario | Approximate organic clicks |
|---|---|
| No AI Overview present | ~33,500 |
| AI Overview present, you are cited | ~20,743 |
| AI Overview present, not cited | ~9,445 |
Citation is worth about 11,300 clicks per million impressions.
Which queries trigger AI Overviews in 2026?
AI Overviews trigger on 21% of all keywords, and 99.9% of those keywords are informational (Ahrefs, 146 million SERPs). Trigger rate varies by query shape, so you can predict where they will hit you before spending a dollar.
| Query type | Trigger rate | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Comparison ("X vs Y") | 95.4% | Build real comparison pages with tables |
| Question format | 85.9% | Question headings answered in 2-3 sentences |
| "Best of" lists | 81.3% | Earn placement in third-party best lists |
| "Near me" informational | 76.9% | Answer-first service pages plus a complete GBP |
| Informational (all) | 36% | Prioritize your informational keywords |
| Commercial | 8% | Standard SEO still governs |
| Transactional | 5% | Protect these, they are your conversion floor |

The 7x gap between informational (36%) and transactional (5%) is the planning insight: "emergency AC repair Plano" is largely unaffected, while "how much does AC replacement cost" is where the AI Overview sits, and where the buyer starts.

The seven factors that correlate with getting cited
Seven measurable factors correlate with AI Overview citation, ranked by strength of evidence.
1. Rank in the traditional top 10
AI answers link at least one organic top-10 domain 92.36% of the time (SE Ranking). If you are not on page one, AI Overview optimization is premature: fix rankings first with ordinary local SEO work.
2. Rank across fan-out queries, not just your head term
Pages ranking across the sub-questions a model generates are 161% more likely to be cited, Spearman 0.77 (SurferSEO). An "AC replacement cost" page should also answer sizing, timing, financing and permits.
3. Earn branded mentions off site
Branded web mentions are the strongest correlating factor at 0.664 Spearman, branded anchors 0.527 (Ahrefs). Locally: chamber pages, local news, supplier features, sponsorships.
4. Get mentioned in video
YouTube mentions correlate at 0.740, the strongest Ahrefs measured, and Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit are about 15% of AI summary sources (Pew). Locally: job walkthroughs titled with your service and city.
5. Answer the query in the first two or three sentences
Retrieval happens at the passage level. A heading followed by a direct answer is a liftable chunk; a heading followed by throat-clearing is not.
6. Write for density, not length
Word count correlates with AI citations at roughly 0.04 Spearman, and grounding plateaus near 540 words while pages beyond 2,000 lose coverage. Density beats length, which is why this article stops where it does.
7. Ship structured data that matches what is visible
Structured data does not create citations, it removes ambiguity about what your page claims, and Google asks that it match visible content. The high-value local types are LocalBusiness, FAQPage, HowTo and Person. Our LLM optimization work starts there.
How to make a page quotable: the chunk-level checklist
Making a page quotable means writing sections that survive being torn out of context. A model retrieves a passage and asks whether that passage alone answers the query. Same content, both ways:
Before (not extractable):
When it comes to air conditioning replacement, there are many factors to consider, and pricing depends on a variety of variables.
After (extractable):
A full AC system replacement in Dallas-Fort Worth typically runs $6,000 to $14,000 installed, depending on tonnage, SEER2 rating and ductwork condition. Replacing ductwork adds $2,000 to $6,000.
The second carries a number, a range, a location and the variables that move it. The first cannot be quoted because it says nothing.
The pattern in seven steps: lead with the direct answer; put the number and its source in one sentence; write headings as the question a person would ask; add one self-contained data block per section; keep paragraphs to two to four sentences; show a visible last-updated date and actually change the page; mirror that answer in schema.
Freshness is a maintenance problem, not a publishing problem
Updating beats publishing. Seer Interactive's July 24, 2026 study (7,683 pages, 47,097 citations) found 75% of cited pages were updated within the last year and 88% within two, while pages older than three years were effectively absent. Only 42% were published in that year, so a maintained four-year-old page outperforms a new one.
- Put your 10 highest-intent informational pages on a two-quarter review cycle.
- Change something substantive each time: a price range, a code requirement, a corrected stat. Touching the timestamp alone is wasted work.
- Show the modified date on the page and in schema. Prices and "cost in 2026" pages decay fastest; definitions decay slowest.
Free AI Visibility Audit: see what ChatGPT actually says about your business
We run your business name, your services and your top "near me" queries through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, then send you the verbatim answers, who got cited instead of you, and the three fixes that close the gap. No cost, no call required. You can also start directly on our free AI visibility audit page.
Ranking in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini is not the same job
The four major answer engines cite different things: only about 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity (5WPR, 680M+ citations). One undifferentiated playbook is why most businesses get visibility on one engine and nothing elsewhere.
| Engine | Cites year-fresh content | Leans toward | Primary local lever |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | Tracks organic (76% of citations rank top 10) | Top-10 pages, "best" lists (48.90%) | Rank page one, then rewrite for extraction |
| Gemini | 78% | Marketplace and comparison content | Comparison pages, service tables, GBP completeness |
| ChatGPT | 73% | Blogs and guides (46% of citations) | Owned educational content |
| Perplexity | 65% | Depth over recency, broad source mix | Long-lived reference pages, third-party mentions |
Sources: Seer Interactive, July 24, 2026; Glen Allsopp / Ahrefs; 5WPR, 2026.
Two takeaways for a small team: ChatGPT is where your own blog can win, while Gemini and AI Overviews reward third-party positioning you do not own, which is slower generative engine optimization work. Our AEO and GEO services page explains the split.
AI Overviews for local and service-area businesses
This is where published advice fails hardest. The dominant playbooks recommend YouTube creator partnerships, "best list" outreach and link intersects against 50+ DR competitors. A six-person HVAC company in Irving cannot execute any of it.
Why the standard playbook does not work for a six-person company
Enterprise advice assumes a brand-mention budget and a content team. The local substitute is proximity: local news, chamber listings, supplier spotlights and association mentions are earnable in weeks at near zero cost, and they carry the same branded-mention signal Ahrefs measured at 0.664. You are competing with three contractors in your county, not with Ahrefs.
Your Google Business Profile as an AI answer surface
Your Google Business Profile is structured data Google already trusts, and it feeds the local answers models generate about you. Categories, services, service areas, hours, attributes, Q&A and photos are all answerable fields, and incomplete profiles produce incomplete answers.
Fill the services list with the exact phrases customers search, seed Q&A with real questions and answers, and keep hours accurate through holidays. Our Google Business Profile optimization service does this, and the GBP guide walks through the DIY version.
Service-area and city pages that survive query fan-out
Thin city pages built by find-and-replace do not get cited, because they hold no passage worth lifting. A page that survives fan-out answers the sub-questions a model generates about that city: pricing, permit rules, housing stock, response times, neighborhoods served.
That is why our city guides carry real market data. See Fort Worth, Frisco and Plano, plus SEO costs across Dallas-Fort Worth. Trades get a version in our contractor local SEO playbook.
The answer-first rewrite: a passage with a number, a range and a location lifts without surrounding context.
Reviews, voice and local entity signals
Reviews are the trust input models lean on when recommending a local provider, because they are third-party and volume-weighted. Brands own only about 2% of the pages cited about them (Seer Interactive, July 24, 2026), and locally, reviews are the largest slice of the other 98%. Spoken queries follow the same answer-first rules, covered in our voice search optimization guide, and our AI for SEO guide covers AI in your own workflow.

How to measure AI Overview visibility, and what to stop measuring
Categories, services, service areas and Q&A on your Google Business Profile are structured inputs to AI-generated answers about your business.
Stop measuring "traffic from AI Overviews": no analytics platform reports it in a trustworthy form, and when an AI Overview appears, impressions rise while clicks fall, so CTR drops even though your position improved. Four metrics replace it:
- Citation share. Of 20 priority queries, on how many are you a linked source? Sample monthly, per engine.
- Mention share. How often are you named, not just linked?
- Click value per impression, AI Overview queries versus non-AI Overview queries in Search Console.
- Freshness compliance. What share of priority pages were updated in 12 months?
Five AI Overview statistics everyone repeats that are wrong
Several widely-cited AI Overview statistics do not survive contact with their primary sources. All five appear on pages ranking page one for this keyword.
| The claim | Where it circulates | What the primary source says |
|---|---|---|
| "Users click AI Overview sources 25% of the time" | segmetrics.io, position 4 | Pew Research Center (July 22, 2025) measured 1%. Off by 25x. |
| "AI Overview businesses see 40% more qualified traffic" | segmetrics.io | No primary source exists; no study measures quality by citation. |
| "Original research means 67% more AI Overview appearances" | segmetrics.io | No primary source exists. Ahrefs' correlations top out at 0.740. |
| "70% of AI Overview triggers are question queries" | segmetrics.io | Conflates two metrics. Ahrefs (Nov 10, 2025): 57.9% of question queries trigger one. |
| "AI Overviews are killing organic traffic" (in 2026) | Most page-one guides | True through 2025, reversed since: CTR rebounded 85% by February 2026 (Seer). |
If a statistic carries no sample size, date or named publisher, treat it as decoration. That test eliminates most of what is written about AI search.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get my business to show up in AI Overviews?
Rank in the organic top 10 first, since 76% of AI Overview citations also rank there (Ahrefs, 1.9M citations). Then rewrite each section to answer its heading in the first two or three sentences, add a self-contained data block, and update the page yearly.
Do AI Overviews use the same ranking factors as regular Google search?
Mostly, with one addition. Google says there is nothing special to do beyond normal search guidance (May 21, 2025), and 92.36% of AI answers link at least one top-10 domain (SE Ranking). The addition is passage-level extractability: the answer must stand alone.
Do AI Overviews still hurt website traffic in 2026?
Less than in 2025. Organic CTR on AI Overview queries fell 61% through September 2025, then rebounded 85%, from 1.31% in December 2025 to 2.36% in February 2026 (Seer Interactive, April 24, 2026). Citation delivers 120% more clicks per impression than no citation.
Does schema markup help you rank in AI Overviews?
Schema does not directly cause citations, but it removes ambiguity about your claims, and Google asks that structured data match visible content (May 21, 2025). For local businesses, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, HowTo and Person matter most, because they describe the entities a model has to resolve.
How do I rank on ChatGPT specifically?
Publish owned educational content and keep it current. ChatGPT draws about 46% of its citations from blogs and guides and cites year-fresh content 73% of the time (Seer Interactive, July 24, 2026). It is the engine where a small business blog has the best chance.
Do "near me" searches show AI Overviews?
Yes, far more often than local SEO checklists acknowledge. "Near me" informational queries such as "best roofer near me" trigger an AI Overview 76.9% of the time across 188,606 impressions (Seer Interactive, April 24, 2026). Transactional near-me queries trigger around 5% of the time.
How do I know if AI is mentioning my business?
Run your priority queries in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, several times each, and log whether you are linked, named, both or neither. Because 62% of AI citations never name the brand (Semrush with Kevin Indig), track linking and naming separately.
Does longer content rank better in AI Overviews?
No. Word count correlates with citations at about 0.04 Spearman, effectively zero (Ahrefs), and grounding plateaus near 540 words with diminishing coverage past 2,000 words (Dan Petrovic, DejanSEO, 7,000+ queries). Density and extractability decide citation, not total length.
